Every resin artist makes mistakes at the start, and that's how you learn. But some mistakes cost you a whole project and a lot of resin. Here are the 10 most common beginner mistakes, what they cause, and exactly how to avoid them.
1. Measuring by eye or by volume
What happens: sticky, soft or bendy resin.
Fix: use a digital scale. Fusion kits are mixed by weight: 2:1 for Vitro and 3:1 for Flex. The full chart is in How to Mix Epoxy Resin Correctly.
2. Not mixing long enough
What happens: soft or wet spots in an otherwise hard piece.
Fix: mix slowly for 3–5 minutes, scrape the sides and bottom, then pour into a second cup and mix for one more minute.
3. Mixing too fast
What happens: lots of tiny bubbles and a foggy look.
Fix: slow, steady stirring. See How to Remove Bubbles from Epoxy Resin.
4. Working in a cold or humid room
What happens: slow curing, cloudy or tacky surfaces.
Fix: keep the room comfortably warm and dry, and cover pieces while they cure. Season-by-season tips are in our Indian weather guide.
5. Pouring too thick with coating resin
What happens: heat, cracks, yellowing or bubbles.
Fix: use 2:1 Vitro for thin coats of 3–4 mm and 3:1 Flex for deep pours of up to 2 inches per layer.
6. Using wet flowers or damp moulds
What happens: brown flowers, cloudy patches or uncured spots.
Fix: dry everything completely. For flowers, use silica gel. See our varmala preservation guide.
7. Adding too much colour
What happens: resin that doesn't cure properly.
Fix: use resin-safe pigments, mica powder or alcohol inks in small amounts.
8. Mixing too much at once
What happens: resin thickens in the cup before you finish, and leftover resin is wasted.
Fix: work out the exact amount first with How Much Resin Do I Need? and add only 10–15% extra.
9. Demoulding too early
What happens: dents, fingerprints or bent pieces.
Fix: wait for the full cure time: about 18–20 hours for Vitro 2:1 and about 24 hours for Flex 3:1, longer in cold rooms.
10. Skipping safety gear
What happens: skin irritation and sensitivity over time.
Fix: wear nitrile gloves every time, work in a ventilated room, and wear a mask when sanding.
💡 Pro tip: Keep a small notebook for each pour: date, room temperature, grams of Part A and Part B, and the result. After 5–6 projects you'll know exactly what works in your space.

FAQs
What is the most common resin mistake?
Wrong measuring. Using a scale and mixing by weight prevents most problems.
Can a ruined resin piece be saved?
Often, yes. Surface problems can be sanded and recoated. Pieces with a badly wrong ratio usually need to be redone.
How do I avoid mistakes as a beginner?
Start with small projects like coasters and keychains. Follow our first project guide.
