Epoxy resin is behind the glossy coasters, flower blocks, nameplates and river tables you see all over Instagram. If you're new to it, this guide explains what epoxy resin is, how it works, the different types, and how to start making your own pieces.
What is epoxy resin?
Epoxy resin is a two-part liquid system:
- Part A: the resin
- Part B: the hardener
On their own, both stay liquid. When you mix them in the correct ratio, a chemical reaction starts and the mix slowly turns into a hard, clear, glossy solid. This process is called curing.
How does epoxy resin work?
- Mixing: Part A and Part B are weighed and mixed together.
- Working time (pot life): the mix stays liquid for a while, so you can colour and pour it.
- Gel stage: the resin thickens and can no longer be poured.
- Cure: it hardens fully into a solid, clear piece.
The reaction gives off a little heat. That's why the right resin type matters for thick pours.
Types of epoxy resin
Coating resin (2:1)
Thin, self-levelling and glossy. Used for coasters, trays, nameplates, frames, MDF art and jewellery. Example: Vitro 2:1.
Casting or deep pour resin (3:1)
Cures with low heat, so it can be poured thick. Used for flower preservation, varmala blocks and deep moulds. Example: Flex 3:1.
The full comparison: 2:1 vs 3:1 Epoxy Resin.
What can you make with epoxy resin?
- Coasters, trays and wall clocks
- Nameplates and photo frames
- Keychains, bookmarks and jewellery
- Flower and varmala preservation (see our varmala guide)
- Tabletops, river tables and furniture coatings
- Gifts for weddings, Diwali and Rakhi
What do you need to start?
A resin kit, a digital scale, mixing cups, stir sticks, silicone moulds, a heat gun and safety gear. The full list is in What You Need to Start Resin Art in India.
💡 Pro tip: Start small. A set of coasters teaches you measuring, mixing, pouring and curing, the four skills behind every resin project. Follow our first project guide.
Why resin quality matters
Good resin is crystal-clear, self-levels, releases bubbles easily and resists yellowing. Low-quality resin can stay sticky, turn cloudy or yellow quickly, which wastes your time and materials.
Can you start a resin business?
Yes. Many artists in India sell resin keychains, nameplates, trays and wedding keepsakes from home. Practise first, start with a few products, and price your work to include your time.
FAQs
Is epoxy resin the same as glue?
Both are epoxies, but art resin is made to be crystal-clear, self-levelling and glossy, not just to stick things together.
How long does epoxy resin take to dry?
Vitro 2:1 cures in about 18–20 hours and Flex 3:1 in about 24 hours at room temperature. Cold rooms take longer.
Is epoxy resin safe to use at home?
Yes, with gloves, good ventilation and the instructions on your kit. Keep it away from children, pets and food.
